Meriwether to Umpire ALCS

NEW YORK
– Major League Baseball announced Monday that Martin Methodist College alumnus Chuck Meriwether has been named a member of the umpire crew for the 2006 American League Championship Series between the Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers, scheduled to begin Tuesday, Oct. 10.

This marks Meriwether’s ninth post season series in his 14 years of serving as an MLB umpire. He has worked five Division Series (1998, 99, 2000, 01, 02, 04), the 2003 NLCS and the 100th World Series in 2004, in addition the two All-Star Games (1996, 2002). One of his most historic games to be a part of was serving as third base umpire for David Cone’s perfect game at Yankee Stadium on July 18, 1999.

30-year veteran umpire Jerry Crawford will serve as Crew Chief behind home plate for Game One, joined by Meriwether (3B), Mike Reilly (RF), Derryl Cousins (2B), Gary Cederstrom (LF) and Hunter Wendelstedt (1B), who will make his LCS debut at the age of 35.

He received an Associate of Arts degree from Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) before continuing his education at Athens State College (Ala.), graduating in 1978 with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education. During his college years, he played first base for the baseball team and served as the manager and trainer for the men's basketball team.

Meriwether became interested in umpiring after reading a print ad for an umpire school and became an umpire for Major League Baseball in 1993 in the American League. He currently wears number 14.

Meriwether's accolades include the Chauncey DeVault Memorial Award from Harry Wendelstedt School for Umpires and he was inducted into the Martin Methodist Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. He was also appointed Consultant for Social and Cultural Diversity for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in that year.

Currently residing in Nashville, Tenn. with his wife Curline and children Jeremy and Christopher; Meriwether works with the Children's Ministry and is a trustee at the Fifteenth Avenue Baptist Church. He also serves as a motivational speaker for youth and civic groups. His hobbies include watching basketball and listening to jazz.

Umpires for the 102nd World Series will be announced when assignments have been made.
