Baseball: RedHawks Open 2010 Season(2/3) – The Martin Methodist College Baseball team opened up the 2010 season last weekend with a pair of double-headers in Montgomery, Alabama. The RedHawks faced two Southern States Athletic Conference opponents in Auburn-Montgomery and Faulkner University.
AUM edged Martin Methodist by one run in both the contests. In the first game of the season Josh Spicer got the nod and had a great outing on the mound. His great game was spoiled in the bottom of the 7th as the Senators hit a walk off two run home run for the 2-1 win. The second game of the RedHawks pounded 10 hits but only produced two runs. AUM only had five hits but it was enough for three runs to take the close game 3-2.
On day two of the road trip Martin Methodist faced Faulkner University for another double-header. For the second time in as many days the RedHawks lost the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. The RedHawks had the 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh but the Eagles managed to squeeze in two runs to edge MMC 6-5.
The RedHawks bats combined with an excellent performance by Travis Garcia on the mound gave Martin Methodist their first win of the season in the second game of the Sunday double-header. In Garcia’s first game on the mound for the RedHawks he pitched a No-Hitter. He struck out 11 in five complete innings to record the shut-out and his first win of the season. At the plate MMC had 10 hits and scored 10 runs to end the weekend on a positive note with a 10-0 win.
Martin Methodist will look to pick up some wins in their next showing. They will host Selma University in a double-header on February 12th at Sam Davis Park with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00.
