Volleyball: RedHawks Suffer Final Loss   printer  

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (11/11) – Martin Methodist College fought to stay alive on the first day of the 2009 TranSouth Volleyball Tournament but on day two the suffered a 3-0 loss to Cumberland University that put them out of the tournament and ended the 2009 season for the RedHawks.
 
The RedHawks were defeated by Trevecca Nazarene University in their first match of the tournament 3-0 but came back in the late game to win 3-0 against Lyon College sending the Pipers home on Monday night. Yesterday they faced Cumberland University in an elimination game and the Bulldogs took the match in three straight sets from Martin Methodist, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22.
 
Three RedHawks were named TranSouth All-Conference with Jhessica Martin selected 1st Team All-Conference and TranSouth Freshman of the Year.  Martins has been a go to hitter for MMC this season and has been atop the NAIA leader board in kills all season. She was selected TranSouth Player of the Week twice this season. Sophomore transfer Precious Sanders was selected 2nd Team TranSouth All-Conference and sophomore Kayla Spencer was selected TranSouth All-Conference Honorable Mention.
 
Martin Methodist was a much improved squad in 2009. The RedHawks turned around a 2-29 season to a 14 win season this year. With new young faces dotting the starting line-up Head Coach Rose Powell feels confident in what is to come for the Martin Methodist College Volleyball program. With hard work in the off season and a strong recruiting class the RedHawks will be a tough competitor in the 2010 TranSouth Athletic Conference.
